Future Doctoral Students

The Doctoral Degree Program is intended for those who hold an undergraduate degree in any field of knowledge.

A Master’s Degree is not required to apply for a Doctoral Degree at PPGEL. However, candidates must have, at least, one scientific text published in a peer-reviewed book or journal.

Applications follow the process described in a document named “Edital” (Call for Applications), which is available in Portuguese at http://www.ppgel.ileel.ufu.br/servicos/processo-seletivo-orientacoes. The Selection Process is annual and usually takes place in the last half of the year, with admissions in the following year.

Minimum Requirements of the Doctoral Degree

Students in the Doctoral Degree Program must meet the following minimum requirements to complete studies:

  • Attend 6 courses (24 credits in total, with each credit equivalent to 15 hours),
  • Attend Thematic Research Seminar (4 credits),
  • Be approved by a Doctoral Dissertation Project Qualification Panel (4 credits),
  • Prove proficiency in one of the following foreign languages: Portuguese, English, French, Spanish (if a foreign student, Portuguese is mandatory),
  • Be approved by a Master’s Thesis Qualification Panel,
  • Be approved by a Doctoral Dissertation Qualification Panel (8 credits),
  • Have one article or book chapter published or accepted for publication during the doctoral studies (6 credits),
  • Accomplish other academic activities according to the Program Standards (8 credits),
  • Have the Doctoral Dissertation approved by a Doctoral Examining Panel in a public session (16 credits).

Minimum Duration: 24 months

Maximum Duration: 48 months

CAPES Ranking: Grade 5 as of 2017 (Excellence Program at the National Level, as evaluated by the Brazilian agency responsible for quality assurance in graduate institutions in Brazil)

Students may apply for scholarships provided by Brazilian funding agencies. The process is described in a document named “Edital” (Call for Applications) available in Portuguese at http://www.ppgel.ileel.ufu.br/servicos/bolsas.

The Doctoral Degree is free of cost. Scholarship is aimed to fund the student’s stay in the City of Uberlândia (Minas Gerais, Brazil). It may last up to 48 months and does not cover housing nor travel allowance.
